First-Rate Product Documentation Is No Luxury

Specializing in the translation of technical documentation, I get to read a wide variety of user manuals. Before I can translate a text, I also have to understand it to make sure that the target text conveys the same meaning and intention as the source. Sometimes this means picking apart awkwardly worded sentences or paragraphs and rewriting them in a way that is easier to understand.

I aim to help customers improve their user manuals. In addition to the benefits listed below, this simplifies my job as translator, since well-written source material is easier and more enjoyable to translate.

There are a number of reasons why good, clearly written product documentation is important.

  • Corporate image: Well-written and clearly structured product documentation conveys competence and an understanding of customers’ needs, which has a positive impact on your company’s image.

  • Ease of comprehension: An easy-to-understand text helps users to avoid problems getting started with the product. This leaves customers with a positive memory and may help reduce the number of phone calls your technical support receives.

  • Competitive edge: Especially in highly competitive market segments, good documentation can give you a decisive edge over your competition.

  • Translation: Well-written texts that present information clearly are easier to translate than long-winded, complicated explanations with unnecessary information. That means quicker delivery, can help reduce the cost of translation and reduces the risk of translation errors.

  • Cutting costs: A well-defined document structure with standardized layout, standard graphic and text elements simplifies the maintenance and change management of your documents.

  • Product liability: In many cases, the manufacturer or supplier is liable for damage caused through missing, ambiguous or hidden information in the product documentation.
